Subject: Invitation: Historic Old Town Neighborhood Plan Kick-Off Event
To:

Hello from Historic Old Town Neighborhood:

Congratulations on your willingness and bravery to run for office in Topeka!

We know how difficult that step can be!  We also know that education of candidates and electeds on the various issues within the city can increase their impact in the office they are seeking or currently hold.

There are two versions of this ask/invitation and we invite you to read the one that you have the time to digest.

Short-Version Ask:

Historic Old Town Neighborhood extends an invitation to candidates running for City Council, Mayor, and Topeka Public Schools Board of Education -- and current officials -- to attend our DREAMS 1 neighborhood plan event on Thursday, May 1st at Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, Marvin Auditorium Room 101 C from 6:00-7:30 PM.

We hope to illustrate how Historic Old Town's challenges, and neighborhoods like it, and efforts towards ameliorating them can be a net benefit to Topeka and Shawnee County at large.

To learn more about our DREAMS 1 designation or how to attend our event please go to our DREAMS 1 landing page at:

**You are free to take photos of attending our event, we only ask that you refrain from open electioneering efforts.**

Long Form Version:

As part of the leadership team of Historic Old Town Neighborhood, we would like to extend an invitation in hopes that you will attend the opening event to our neighborhood's DREAMS 1 2025-2027 designation.

If you are not familiar with the City of Topeka's DREAMS initiative, in short, it is a critical opportunity for significant financial investment into neighborhoods that are low-to-moderate income.  Additional factors that qualify neighborhoods to apply for DREAMS 1 specifically include low homeownership, increased numbers in blight, and crime.

In short, it has both blessings and drawbacks.

Why You Are Invited:

As individuals seeking or currently office, we feel it is valuable for you to bear witness to:
  • How a healthy Historic Old Town is beneficial to a healthy Topeka/Shawnee County
  • How disinvestment and reliance on free market harms low-to-moderate income neighborhoods
  • How neighbors work together to draw in resources
  • What neighbors living at or just above federal poverty guidelines value in their choice of neighborhoods (when they have that option)
  • How social determinants of health and dynamics within households affect seemingly unrelated items such as infrastructure and urban renewal and sprawl

We look forward to seeing you!
