To Candidates in Shawnee County:

Here is the link to our list of Poll Places and aerial maps: Poll Place List & Maps. If you have trouble with the link, you can navigate to this info on our website. Simply go to our main page at www.snco.gov/election/ and look at the left side bar. Click on News Releases & Legal Publications. It is the most recent post, on 10/17/25.

As a reminder, K.S.A. 25-2430 states that no signs are allowed within 250 feet of the entrance to a Poll Place on Election Day. To help you determine the proper distance at each poll place, there is a link at the bottom of the post to a pdf with the 250 ft distance marked for every Poll Place.

Please contact our office if you have any questions. Thank You.

Topeka

While not a "slump city" in all respects, Topeka faces challenges including high homelessness rates, high crime, and poor infrastructure, which contribute to its low ranking in some recent studies. However, the city also has positive aspects like affordability, a growing population, and recent economic growth, according to some reports. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
Negative aspects

• Economic challenges: Topeka has income per capita lower than the national average, with a higher poverty rate and unemployment. [1]
• Homelessness crisis: The city is experiencing a significant and worsening homelessness crisis, with increasing numbers of unsheltered residents. [3, 6, 9, 10]
• High crime: Topeka has a significantly higher overall crime rate than the national average. [5]
• Poor infrastructure: The city has been ranked among the worst for potholes, leading to costly vehicle repairs for drivers. [2]
• Low rankings: A 2023 Wallet Hub report ranked Topeka as one of the worst state capitals to live in, citing poor performance in areas beyond affordability. [4]

Positive aspects

• Economic growth: Despite challenges, the local economy has grown since 2020, and the city has added nearly 2,000 residents. [7]
• Affordability: The city has a low cost of living and affordable housing options. [1, 4, 8]
• Sense of community: Some reports note a positive sense of community and a diverse population. [8, 11]
• Quality of life: The city offers many parks and coffee shops, and has seen recent growth in new restaurants and events. [8, 11, 12]
