Is this what you had in mind when you voted for your county commissioners, school boards, or city council?
Property taxes in Kansas are out of hand.
Because of the way the valuations are calculated, your generationally owned family farm or ranch may get valued well beyond what is reality because they base it on the recent sales of similar land in the region. This is about to be proven illegal. You cannot be taxed on unrecognized gains. That is, if you haven't sold your home or land, you have not gained an income on it. You are not able to use this increased value as cash money you can pay bills with or take vacations with. In many cases here in Kansas we find elderly, retired farmers or widows living on Social Security or a meager retirement. They are unable to increase their income at this point. Their property taxes are growing beyond what they can afford to pay despite their land or home long since being paid off with the bank. Now they owe the Petty Kings locally, the tax authorities, (such as the school board, the city council, and the county commissioners) "rent" on what they worked their entire lives to pay off.
So this begs the question, "Are we so greedy and self-centered as a community to allow these "Petty Kings" to force little old ladies off of their family land?"
