From the Dean

Dear friends,

Tonight I invite you to Silents in the Cathedral. Should be a great time. From 1922-76, Alfred Hitchcock directed 53 films, nine of them silent films that are collectively referred to as the Hitchcock Nine. Among them is 1927's The Lodger, which I have somehow never managed to see. Well, we're going to fix that tonight.
Speaking of things you don't want to miss out on – you may be tempted to skip church on Sunday, November 5th (the Chiefs play the Dolphins in Germany starting at 8:30 a.m.). My advice: Don't. That's going to be an excellent day for the Real Kingdom® in Topeka. While fans of "Team Traylor" polish off their bratwurst and schnitzel in Frankfurt, we will mark God's activity in our lives by remembering those gone before and those who will come behind, placing us in a long line of spiritual pilgrims. Attendees of the 8:30 a.m. service will renew their baptismal vows, while at 10:30, we will have baptisms and welcome seven new persons into the household of faith.
Please bring family photos on the 5th and set them out in All Saints Hall any time from 9:30-10:15. Then, following our 10:30 service, roam the hall and share family stories with each other. Who's essential in your life story? Where are you from? Who are the most important people in your story? What do you want others to know about you and the story of you? Let us in on who you are.
Movies and baptisms and family histories may seem like disparate things. To me it feels like part of what it means to live our our baptismal promises with one another in community. So I look forward to seeing you!

Yours in Christ,
Torey+
THE LODGER - A STORY OF THE LONDON FOG (1927)
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Our feature presentation for the 26th annual 'Silents in the Cathedral' will be an Encore Presentation of the classic British silent feature, THE LODGER, the third feature film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and the one most critics (and even Hitchcock himself ) pointed to as the first 'real' Hitchcock thriller.
The feature will be preceded by three short subject films —The Haunted House (1921), Felix in Fairyland (1923), and Isn't Life Terrible? (1925)
Organist Marvin Faulwell and percussionist Bob Keckeisen have put together a dazzling music score for this feature and they will be playing it live at the Cathedral.
Sponsored by the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library with the cooperation of the Kansas Silent Film Festival, Inc. Free and open to the public.

Adult Forum

On Sunday, October 29, join the Adult Forum to learn about Kansas Interfaith Action (KIFA) with Rev. Rachael R. Pryor.
KIFA is a statewide, multi-faith issue-advocacy organization that "puts faith into action" by educating, engaging and advocating on behalf of people of faith and the public. KIFA focuses on issues that address the four evils: racism/discrimination, violence, poverty, and climate disruption.
This fall, special emphasis for education is the subject of White Christian Nationalism. Rev. Pryor will discuss the role of KIFA and the specific critical challenges that our state and nation are facing.

The Adult Forum meets each Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in All Saints Hall.

Also continuing on Sundays at 9:30:
  • Dean's Bible Study (Robyn Room)
  • Book Study: What St. Paul Really Said with LeRoy Dagg (Bubb Room)

News and Notes

  • TRUNK or TREAT is moving
Due to rainy and cold weather, this annual event will now be an indoor event at First United Methodist Church, 6th and Topeka Blvd. It will still take place this Sunday, October 29, from 3-5 p.m. HOWEVER...instead of decorating car trunks, you will pass out candy from decorated tabletops. Please join our friends from First United Methodist and First Presbyterian Churches to make this event a success, despite the weather!

  • Convention recap: You may be interested in gaining a better picture of the events of this past weekend during our annual Diocesan Convention. The information on this page will give you a brief recap, and Dean Lightcap is always available to answer any questions you may have.
In addition to the dean, Cathedral representatives in attendance were Canon Jody, and delegates Marilyn Trubey, Dominique Shannon, and Ted Yungclas. Mike Wilson was our elected alternate this time.

  • November Senior Saints luncheon: Wednesday, November 8. The program will feature a speaker from Lifehouse Child Advocacy Center. Social time begins at 11 a.m., with lunch at 11:30. A free-will offering is appreciated.
You can RSVP here or you can call the Cathedral office at 785-235-3457. Please RSVP by Monday, November 6.

  • Thank you note: "A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been praying for me the past few months. The diagnosis of cancer along with the thyroid issues came as a big surprise. Your prayers kept me calm while waiting for treatment. A positive report came from my treatment last week. Praise God and thank you very much!!"

  • No EChimes next Friday: Expect the next EChimes on Friday, November 10.

  The Cloister Gallery

Now showing: Watercolors by Cecilia Roberts

Cecilia Roberts was born and raised in Parsons, KS, and recently relocated to Lawrence, Kansas from New York City, where she worked as a portrait painter for over a decade. Before moving to New York, Cecilia first discovered her love of portrait painting while studying illustration and painting at the University of Kansas (2002 - 2007). Her work is in several private collections, and can be viewed on her website, www.cecilia-roberts.com.

Artist Statement
My paintings are impressions of personality and meaning from the people, non-human animals, spaces and objects I paint. I am interested in the character and quirks of my subjects, and approach painting them with curiosity, joy, and humor. My work stems from a love of painting and observational artmaking, as well as a love of getting to know my subjects, and thinking about the reflections of humanity in the spaces and objects we create for ourselves.

The Cloister Gallery is open to the public Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.; as well as Sunday mornings.
