From the Dean
Dear friends,
Today, our four candidates for the Eleventh Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas will finish up their weeklong “Meet & Greet" visit to central and eastern Kansas. Tonight, you will be able to learn more about them at a forum sponsored by the diocesan Transition Committee and our diocesan trustees. It starts at 7 p.m. in the cathedral.
I try not to overstate too many things (well, I try), but this is a crucial moment for the diocese. We all have big questions about the way forward; we all have our sense of vision and what is important; all of the candidates have their own; and the Holy Spirit has the ultimate discernment. Each one of us is asked to see for ourselves, pray, discern, and consult with one another.
I urge you to come and get to know each candidate’s individual personality, ideas, and approaches. Listen to how they talk about God. Note what excites you. If you cannot come, then watch the recordings of the Q&As from this week that will be available soon on the diocese’s web site.
In the meantime, there’s a lot to learn about each candidate. The diocesan web site hosts a detailed Bishop Search section where you can see biographical information, résumes, sermons, and answers to specific questions.
Seven people from Grace Cathedral will be present on October 24th to vote for the next bishop: Ruth Ohm, Kathy Slawson, Sarah Shipman, Don Chubb, Carl Edwards, Jody Carroll, and me. Additionally, there are two alternate lay delegates—Bill Stelzner and Melissa Weikel—who will step in should either Ruth or Kathy become unavailable. Although each of us will vote according to our own conscience and conviction, we will still be curious to know what you think about our candidates in the runup.
As a co-chair of the diocese’s Bishop Search Committee, I can personally attest that I have spent a lot of time learning about and from each of our candidates. They all have different strengths and ideas. But each is committed to the Kingdom preached by Jesus. So I urge you once more to come and see.

Adult Forum resumes this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in All Saints Hall. Dean Torey and Canon Jody will lead Part 1 of a 2-part series on AI and the Church.
The Justice Ministry at Grace Cathedral wants to hear from you! Please join us for a listening session this Sunday at Noon in the Bubb Room. This is the important first step of our process where we seek to understand how people are impacted by the problems that Topeka JUMP is working on, and start building our people power so we can work to address those problems together. Nature Sacred, a community health organization and early supporter of Bethany House & Garden, is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary by visiting thirty of its "Sacred Place" sites throughout the year. Rev. Caroline Howard will host a community gathering on Friday, September 25th, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. to celebrate with live music, refreshments, and a journaling activity. Rev. Howard will also lead a guided labyrinth walk at the end of the evening. |

Reception for Don Chubb:
Saturday, September 26, will mark 50 years of ordained ministry for Don. The next day, Sunday, September 27, we will host a celebratory reception for him after the 10:30 a.m. service to mark those many years. Please put this date on your calendar and plan to join us.
The Cathedral Choir recently resumed rehearsals after a break for the summer. With the new season, the choir will enjoy new fun activities, and renewed opportunities. St. Augustine said that “singing is praying twice” so, why not try it?! YOU ARE INVITED to join us at any time. Rehearsals are on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. upstairs in the choir room. Please talk to Zachary, Eduardo or Donald or simply show up! We would LOVE to have you!
Movie Night Save the Date:
A Face in the Crowd, Friday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the cathedral.
The next Great Spaces concert will be on Sunday, October 11 at 3:00 p.m. The Spire Chamber Ensemble invites you into a contemplative world where music becomes a vessel for hope, renewal, and the passage of time. General admission tickets are $30, and student tickets are $10.
Save the Date for Silents in the Cathedral on Friday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m.
The 29th Annual Silents in the Cathedral will feature three short films followed by the feature film The Student of Prague (1926). This event is free to attend, and is a partnership between the cathedral, the Kansas Silent Film Festival, and the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. |

Doorstep has designated September as its month to recognize Grace Cathedral. Doorstep’s mission is to provide families and individuals with short-term basic needs assistance and information on or referrals to resources for long-term success. They are currently seeking out volunteers to help with clothing assistance (8:45 a.m. – 1 p.m.). They are also running two fundraisers: the Sertoma Great Topeka Duck Race on September 26 and the Starlight Action which runs October 18-24.
Blessing Box items needed: Thank you again for your continued support of the Blessing Box and our neighbors in need. Donations of non-perishable food items may be brought to church and placed in the grocery cart in the Cathedral. Donations may also be brought to the Cathedral office at any time during business hours. Thank you!
Sharing Table Donations: Current needs include: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, bar soap, deodorant, feminine hygiene, band-aids, body lotion, disposable razors, shaving cream, hair brushes, combs, and pain reliever. No clothing donations. Thank you for your continued support that is making a positive difference in the lives of our neighbors! |

Are you interested in meeting some church members and enjoying a meal together? We are trying a new version of small dinner groups this fall. Each month, a date will be set for folks interested in participating in a dinner for eight. If you think you might be inclined to try this out, provide your name, email address and telephone #. As each new month approaches, you will receive an email indicating the date for the dinner group. You may elect to respond yes or no for that particular month. If October doesn’t work for you, perhaps November or December will. Typically, someone from the folks who sign up will host the dinner and provide the entree. If folks prefer to host at the church, that will certainly work as well. The Bubb Room would make a lovely setting for a small get-together. The host for a particular month will contact the folks who plan to attend to arrange for food to bring (salad, bread, dessert, etc.).
With this new structure, folks will attend on dates that work easily for them. It should decrease frustration of finding a date that works for eight people. You may see the same friends frequently; you may have the opportunity to meet more folks, depending on how often you choose to attend.
The key is, if you are interested in meeting new folks for a relaxed dinner and conversation, sign up!! You may choose to go or not go when contacted with the date each month.
Over 25 folks have already signed up. Singles and couples are all welcome! If you did not have the opportunity to sign up at the Ministry Fair but are interested in being notified about upcoming dinners, there is still time to sign up.
