Waffles

Waffles were invented in Medieval Europe, with their origins dating back to the 9th or 10th century in what is now France and Belgium. These early versions were simple, flat cakes made of grain and water, cooked between two metal plates called "gaufriers" over an open fire. Over time, the designs on the irons became more complex, and the batter evolved to include things like honey and spices.

• Ancient roots: The concept of cooking a flat cake between two grids over a fire is believed to have originated with the ancient Greeks.
• Medieval development: In Medieval Europe, these flat cakes were called "wafers" and spread throughout the continent. The Dutch and Belgians were particularly influential in their evolution.
• Modernization: As waffle irons became more intricate, the patterns became more defined. The word "waffle" itself came from the Dutch word "wafel," which English speakers adopted in the early 1700s. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
