We need to replace our "karen" - This author believes the euphemism originated in Topeka ......... see the image.

This author believes the euphemism originated in Topeka ......... see the image.

The slang term "Karen" refers to a stereotype of a person, typically a middle-aged woman, who is perceived as entitled, demanding, and often rude or overly assertive, especially in situations where they feel they’re not getting their way. It’s used to describe someone who might complain excessively, ask to "speak to the manager" over minor issues, or act as if rules don’t apply to them. The term has evolved into a cultural meme, often used humorously or critically online to call out this kind of behavior.

For example, if someone cuts in line at a coffee shop and then loudly demands special treatment when called out, people might say, "She’s such a Karen." It’s not about the name itself—Karen just became the placeholder—but the attitude and actions associated with it. The term gained traction on social media, especially around 2019-2020, and has since been applied broadly, sometimes even beyond the original stereotype.
