I've told this story before. But this story is so inspiring… I feel I have to tell it again. So let's begin. Growing up, I played basketball for a church. And coming from a single-mother household… My mom couldn't get me to my practices or games. She was busy working. But I never missed a game or practice. How? Because my friend's dad made sure I didn't. His name was Wayne. He was a busy man. And a successful salesman who was the sole provider for his family. But even with everything he had going on… He made time to take me to my practices and games. Now, I have to mention… Wayne was a devout Christian. And he always found ways to help his fellow man. I'll admit, out of all the people I know… Wayne was the best example of what a Christian should be. But for whatever reason… Bad things happen to good people. And Wayne was diagnosed with stage 4 Leukemia. He had 6 months to live. At the time, his two sons were in high school. And Wayne wanted more than anything to see them graduate. So he made a promise to his sons. And that was… He'd make it to their graduation. Now, you have to understand… Leukemia is a type of cancer that attacks your bone marrow. And to beat it, you need a bone marrow transplant from a compatible donor. The problem was… Wayne didn't have a donor. Now, since Wayne was a salesman, he had a big network. So Wayne used his large network to hold bone marrow drives… Bringing thousands of people together for testing… In an attempt to match donors with Leukemia patients. For 3 years, Wayne continued hosting bone marrow drives where leukemia patients got matched with compatible donors. And as a result, Wayne saved thousands of cancer patients from almost certain death. But sadly, Wayne never found a donor for himself. Here's the mysterious part: Wayne outlived the 6-month deadline the doctors gave him. He also fulfilled his promise and made it to both his son's graduation. Even crazier? Wayne is still alive today. 17 years after doctors told him he'd die. So what's Wayne's secret? Fighting back with God's help. You see, as soon as Wayne discovered he had cancer… He started eating better. He started exercising. And he started taking natural supplements to boost his health. He did whatever he could to fight back. He never gave up. And at the same time, he never stopped living as a Man of God. He never stopped serving his fellow man. All while staring death in the eyes. Now, I truly believe God works in mysterious ways. God worked through Wayne... Saving thousands of people with Wayne's help. The best part? God didn't let Wayne die. And today, Wayne is still alive. And thriving. In fact, he's healthier than most people his age and enjoys his life with his grandchildren and wife… 17 years after they said he'd die. And yes, he still has leukemia. A miracle? I'd say so. Have a blessed day… -John Carlisle |
