From the Canon Greetings Friends, It seems fireworks are nearly always a staple of 4th of July celebrations and the bigger and more colorful, the better. I am, however, looking forward to a different type of fireworks this year; the community-wide worship service at our own Cathedral. The open invitation to gather in such a beautiful place creates an amazing opportunity for our collective heart and spirit to explode in song, in worship and in love for God, our beloved Creator, who frees us to serve one another – humbly and in love. I look forward to sharing the experience with you! — Canon Jody | | Grace Cathedral will celebrate our nation's Independence with a community celebration and worship service. We strive not to waste words or actions or time, but simply to "pray as we ought." One thing we experience each Sunday is the Eucharistic Prayer – that time during Holy Communion when the priest offers thanks to God through Jesus Christ for the gift of the meal of bread and wine among his followers. This Eucharistic Prayer can be very different depending on where you are in the world and which Book of Common Prayer from which you're worshipping. For the six Sundays starting July 21 and concluding August 25, we will be worshipping at Communion with six very different Eucharistic Prayers at the 10:30 service. We've taken the time to gather these prayers from Anglican traditions in England, Canada, and New Zeland. Each one is lovely and lyrical in its own way. Listen closely to each week, noting the differences as we go, and, like John Wesley, you may find your heart to be strangely warmed. 8:30 service attendees worshipping in Rite 1 will also notice a difference during these six weeks. At this service, we customarily use Prayer 2, (Book of Common Prayer p. 340) which is a shortened version of Prayer 1 (p. 333). However, for those six Sundays, we will pray Prayer 1. I think you'll really be struck by the differences and find new meaning through it. The text goes directly back to the year 1549 and the publication of the very first Book of Common Prayer. ~ Dean Lightcap | | July 3 11:30 a.m., Stephen Ministry (Robyn Room) July 4 - Office closed 10:00 a.m., Independence Day Service (Cathedral) July 5 - Office closed July 6 8:30 a.m., Saturday Sandwich Ministry (ASH kitchen) 8:30 a.m., Blessing Bags and Sharing Table distribution (ASH) July 7 8:30 a.m., Spoken Service of Holy Communion (Cathedral) 10:30 a.m., Club Jesus for children (Sloan Hall) 10:30 a.m., Holy Communion with organ and choir (Cathedral) 5:00 p.m., Youth Group July 8 Noon: American Red Cross Blood Drive (ASH) July 9 9:00 a.m., Morning Prayer (St. Mary's Chapel) 10:30 a.m., Jack Dicus Memorial Service (Cathedral) 11:30 a.m., Women's Study Group (Robyn Room) 3:30 p.m., Staff meeting (Bubb Room) 6:00 p.m., Outreach Committee (Robyn Room) July 10 11:00 a.m., Senior Saints luncheon (ASH) July 11 7:30 a.m., Men's Study Group (Bubb Room) 9:00 a.m., Morning Prayer (St. Mary's Chapel) 7:00 p.m., Choir rehearsal (Choir Room) July 13 8:30 a.m., Saturday Sandwich Ministry (ASH kitchen) July 14 8:30 a.m., Spoken Service of Holy Communion (Cathedral) 10:30 a.m., Club Jesus for children (Sloan Hall) 10:30 a.m., Holy Communion with organ and choir (Cathedral) 5:00 p.m., Youth Group July 16 9:00 a.m., Morning Prayer (St. Mary's Chapel) 3:30 p.m., Staff meeting (Bubb Room) July 18 7:30 a.m., Men's Study Group (Bubb Room) 9:00 a.m., Morning Prayer (St. Mary's Chapel) 7:00 p.m., Choir rehearsal (Choir Room) | | Worship opportunities with Grace Cathedral | | | In-person Services - We offer two Sunday services of Holy Communion: 8:30 (spoken only) and 10:30 (with music).
